On August 9, the Hawaii fire started as a scattered brush fire and seemed to be the fastest-moving wildfire. The flames on the Hawaiian island of Maui have killed at least 96 people. Thousands of locals have lost their houses, and a town dating back a hundred years got destroyed.

What Caused The Maui Fire?

The fires appeared to have started in vegetation before spreading into residential areas. Later the island got shaken by prevailing winds exceeding 60 mph. The fire tore through crossroads and leapt across wooden houses in a town centre that dates to the 1700s. The blaze surged into coastal Lahaina with terrifying speed and severity.

The locals made their way to the roads, also hindered by the flaming residue. People who had jumped into the water to get away from the fire were also rescued by the US Coast Guard. The count was 14 people, with 12 adults and 2 children. The climate scientist, Daniel Swain, said that this wildfire started in the green area. Later it then moved to the urban side. There, it began burning structures. 

Were There Any Sirens To Warn The Locals?

Some Maui locals wonder if there were sirens to warn them. Witnesses claimed they had little advance notice. They described their panic as the fire swiftly and thoroughly destroyed Lahaina. To get away, several folks dived into the Pacific Ocean.

The sirens, which were set up to inform people of approaching natural disasters, did not ring. The widespread power and cellphone failures complicated other warning methods.

Josh Green, the governor of Hawaii, promised on Sunday. He said to look at the emergency alert and response systems.

Where More Did The Hawaii Fire Spread?

The firefighters were still battling blazes in Lahaina and Upcountry Maui, which included raging fires and flare-ups.

The officials said that the Upcountry/Kula fire was 60% controlled. The Lahaina fire was 85% contained. And the Pulehu/Kihei fire was 100% contained.

The county emphasized that even if a fire is completely contained, it does not state it got put out. Instead, it means that firefighters have it entirely surrounded by a perimeter.

Is Hawaii Fire Still Burning?

The Maui County Fire Chief Bradford Ventura said the area around the raging fire looks cool. He also said that it has not been spreading any further. Moreover, he said that the National Guard and other teams are ready to help but fear the upcoming fire.

The fire department had to fly to Lahaina. They wanted to see if any other spots around needed further attention. The valley’s Pulehu fire is out.

The Lahaina Fire on West Maui was to have burnt 2,170 acres and damaged or destroyed more than 2,200 buildings. On Saturday, The Pacific Disaster Centre said that residential buildings made up around 86% of the structures. Those structures were at risk from the fire.

It is over a week after a wildfire destroyed the ancient town of Lahaina, Hawaii, killing at least 99 people. The anticipated death toll is going to rise dramatically. The workers have just searched through 25% of the destroyed region.

According to Maui Police Chief, 20 cadaver dogs and more than 90 FEMA personnel led the search on Monday. On Tuesday, Pelletier added, the public wants to know the identity of some of the fatalities.
